SESSION 10 - May 21, 2018
I. CORE MATERIALS
1. In this session, we reviewed the concept and realities of a System so as to begin to hone our ability to use the concept in real life when looking at transforming something within ourselves (our thoughts, our behaviors, a mindset, a way of habitually being in certain circumstances) or with others (how we may approach particular people because we have an idea in our head about what they will be like) or a group of people together (how might their web of interdependence cause the very dysfunctions they or we are trying to resolve).
We began our exploration of system through the examining of what the words themselves cause us to mis-perceive. System. Systems Thinking. And then went on to introduce the value of the Iceberg metaphor of a systems and its many layers of intervention.
2. The Systems Thinking Slides document we used during the call may be useful to some of you as a refresher. It contains the Iceberg model and the diagnostic questions that can be used to really understand the current reality of a system you intend to improve. Diagnosis always starts from the top to the bottom. Design for a new reality asks itself what would need to change/shift from the bottom up for the ideal new outcomes to become the new norm.

It is a great way to help understand simply what Systems and Systems Thinking is really all about. Understanding the web of interdependences much more clearly and then fining those 'non-obvious points of leverage' to intervene into as change agents. But also it helps us see what we, as agents of change must be willing to 'be' - willing to be wrong, willing to learn deeply from others who are not like us (collective intelligence), willing to take our time as the change may take some time to ingrain itself.
